Whether you’re brand new to shotguns or have years of experience, this guide will help you prepare for your session. Many of our students are first-time shotgun shooters , you are welcome here. We foster a safe, structured, and respectful training environment. No prior experience is assumed.
What To Bring
Eye Protection
Clear or tinted safety glasses. Prescription glasses are acceptable.Ear Protection
Electronic earmuffs. Electronic ear protection is recommended so you can clearly hear instruction.Shotgun
12 gauge or 20 gauge are most common.

Target loads only (typically #7.5 or #8 shot). 50 shells per person
Defensive: 50 birdshot, 20 slugs, 20 buckshotBrimmed hat (sun protection and helps deflect ejected shells)
Water and light snacks
Clothing Guidelines
General: Tie back long hair.,Dress for outdoor weather conditions.. Wear clothing that allows full movement without excess fabric.
Tops: Fitted athletic shirt, quarter-zip, performance polo, or shooting shirt. Closed-top shirts recommended (avoid low-cut styles).
Wear supportive athletic undergarments as appropriate for comfort during movement and recoil.
Avoid baggy sleeves, and tops that are too tight across the shoulders.
Bottoms: Comfortable pants with pockets (cargo, stretch jeans, performance pants). Avoid overly loose or restrictive clothing.
Footwear: Closed-toe shoes with good traction are required. Boots, Athletic sneakers, trail shoes, or lightweight hiking shoes work well. No sandals or slick-soled shoes.
Avoid: Loose scarves. Dangling jewelry. Clothing that restricts shoulder movement
If You Don’t Own a Shotgun
If you do not have a shotgun or are unsure what gauge is appropriate, contact us prior to your session.
20 gauge is often preferred for smaller-framed shooters or those concerned about recoil.
Proper fit and stance significantly reduce felt recoil.
We will ensure you are properly set up for a safe and comfortable experience.
Safety Policies

Shotguns remain unloaded and actions open unless on the firing line.
Strict muzzle discipline is maintained at all times.
Only target ammunition is permitted.
All instruction is conducted under direct supervision.
This is not a free-shoot environment, it is structured, deliberate training.
Youth & Family Participation
Youth shooters are welcome with appropriate supervision and age-appropriate equipment.

Frequently Asked Questions
Is shotgun shooting hard to learn?
No. With proper instruction, most new shooters successfully hit targets during their first session.
Do I need prior experience?
No prior experience is required.
What gauge should I use?
12 gauge is most common. 20 gauge is often preferred for reduced recoil and lighter weight.
How physically demanding is it?
Shotgun shooting involves standing and mounting the firearm repeatedly. Comfortable footwear and hydration are recommended.
What if I’m nervous?
That’s completely normal. Many first-time shooters feel the same way. We move at a pace that prioritizes safety and confidence.
